New wellbeing report captures the results of a pan-European survey conducted by European Schoolnet under its Future Classroom Lab initiative.
This Teacher wellbeing survey was available to educators in 13 languages between February 2023 and June 2023. It investigated the current state of school acoustics across Europe. The aim included understanding better what secondary school educators think about the impact of classroom and school noise on their work and well-being. The “Sound in schools and its impact on learning and teachers’ wellbeing”, online questionnaire was followed by in-depth interviews with selected respondents.
Teacher voice and understanding the occupants perspective is vital for the design of schools
It’s the teachers who inhabit the schools. So, their experiences, perceptions and expectations should be given a greater prominence in the design and renovation of learning spaces! It is clear from the survey, how important teachers feel it is to control noise in learning spaces:
Key findings from the learners and teachers’ wellbeing survey:
- 71% of teachers agree or strongly agree that students find it difficult to concentrate at school because of how noisy it is.
- 78% of teachers agree or strongly agree that noise in class prevents efficient interactions and properly hearing students’ questions and/or contributions to the learning process.
Further key findings:
How frequently teachers feel there is too much school noise?
The report finds that teachers think the majority of their students experience mental or physical challenges from noise at least once a week.
Noise caused by negative behaviour is also highlighted by teachers.
