Ceilings and walls are important as to how we hear sound and music. They absorb, reflect or diffuse sound waves. The challenge is managing these reflections, because they indeed influence the sound being heard. Outdoor venues naturally have little reverberance. Some outdoor concert environments have better sound than others.
Here is some relevant advice from Trevor Cox, a professor of acoustic engineering at the University of Salford in England, on what you yourself actively can do in the quest for a good listening experience.
- Positioning yourself at a spot with an unobstructed line between you and several speakers. This will enhance your listening experience.
- Don’t sit too close to the speakers.
- Find the mixing desk. If you sit nearby, you’re getting the sound exactly as the sound engineer thinks it should be heard.
