The bells at a Liskeard church in United Kingdom are affecting the peace and quiet of the town. People complain that the bells are rung too often and are too loud – some 85 decibels. Church leaders counterattack and say the regular rhythmic chimes help make Liskeard special. It seems that church bells are not treated like pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops, which have to have a license to make noise like that. The bells are designed to be heard. Thus the bell sound propagates far way and with power. To do something people have to officially complain and factors to be considered when assessing a noise nuisance include the time, duration, frequency and reasonableness of the noise being complained about.
